Electrode arrangement for fluorescent lamp

An electrode arrangement in fluorescent lamps uses two heated electrodes (2,3) in a base with the same shape. One is surrounded by a tube (4) but the other is free-standing inside the bulb (1). The electrode in the tube is sealed in it so that the effective discharge path is shortened. The tube may widen out above the electrode and have constrictions to optimise the ratio of normal running voltage to the discharge current. Hollow bodies can be slid onto the tube to change the current path cross- section or the gas volume.
