Conditioning and repairing surface of permanent moulds

The damaged surface of a permanent mould is repaired by surrounding it with a metal capsule (2) which is vacuum and gas-tight. The area between the surface and capsule is evacuated and possibly filled with a suitable gas before subjecting the assembly to a high pressure of at least 200 bar and temperature of at least 750 deg C. Finally the capsule is fully removed to leave a reconstituted mould surface.
