Water in a tank (1) is treated by circulation in one direction through at least one main filter (14). During a subsequent flushing cycle, rinse water passes through the filter in the opposite direction before treatment. The treated rinse water is stored in a reservoir (51), separate from the main tank, and may be used in a subsequent flushing cycle. Also claimed is the appts. for treating water in a tank (1), comprising: a main filter (14); a prim. circuit (6) contg. the filter, supply (10) and drain (11); means to pass rinse water in the opposite direction; means for treating the rinse water (28-30); and a sec. circuit (20) with a supply (19) for treatment and drain (21). A reservoir (51) stores the treated water and is connected to both the prim. and sec. circuits.
