Single strand cleavage of DNA comprises: (a) creating a mixt. comprising an N-aryl-N-(alkyl or aralkyl) hydroxylamine of formula (I) and DNA in an aq. buffer soln. of pH 5-8, and (b) irradiating the mixt. under anaerobic conditions with a UV light of wavelength >300 nm for 1-6 hrs. and allowing DNA cleavage to occur. R1 = H, 1-6C alkyl, phe, 1-6C alkoxy, phenoxy, 1-6C alkoxycarbonyl, halo or halo (1-6C alkyl); R2 = H; R3 = H or phe, and R4 = H, phe, hydroxylphenyl, methoxyphenyl, dimethoxyphenyl, dimethylaminophenyl or naphthyl. |
