A method for restricting a fluid flow path (12) in subterranean geological formations (5) to facilitate the removal of hydrocarbons. The method includes injecting a first water volume (16) into the fluid flow path (12). The first water volume (16) displaces fluids present in the fluid flow path (12). An alkaline volume (18) is injected into the fluid flow path (12) to displace the first water volume (16) ahead of the alkaline volume (18). A first water and alkaline mixed continuum (15) forms between the first water volume (16) and the alkaline volume (18). In the continuum (15), the relative concentrations of water and alkaline vary along a length (21) of the first water and alkaline mixed continuum (15). These relative concentrations of water and alkaline are conducive to the formation of scale upon surfaces of the subterranean geological formation (5). The scale restricts fluid flow paths (12) in the subterranean geological formation (5). By pumping additional fluids into the formation (5), these fluids will be diverted into unexploited areas of the formation (5). The additional fluids will remove hydrocarbons from these unexploited areas so that the hydrocarbons may be recovered by a producing well (30).
|
