Apparatus and method for automated loading of a drilling machine package (72) having a plurality of drill bit receiving openings (74) arranged in a known configuration with verified precision drill bits (200) from a drill bit container (210) is disclosed. The apparatus includes an automated transfer machine (30) connected to a control device (42), a package frame (60), a container receiving member (44), and a diameter sensing device (104). The package frame (60) and container receiving member (44) are located at positions accessible by the automated transfer machine (30). The automated transfer machine (30) removes a precision drill bit (200) from a drill bit container (210) on the container receiving member (44) and the diameter sensing device (104) measures the diameter of the precision drill bit (200). The automated transfer machine (30) delivers the precision drill bit (200) to a drill bit receiving opening (74) in a drilling machine package (72) on the package frame (60).
