A first value (V) corresponding to the angular units covered during two successive actual positions transmitted via the data path at the maximum rotation speed of the measuring device shaft (W) and a second value (D) corresponding to the difference between the maximum travel of the angular position measuring device (MAX) and the first value (V) are stored. A processing unit determines the direction of rotation of the shaft (W) dependently upon whether two actual positions (X11, X12; X21,X22; X31, X32) lie in the region between the zero point (NP) of the angular position detector and an actual position (L2) corresponding to the value of the first stored value (V), or in the region between an actual position (L1) corresponding to the value of the second stored value (D) and the maximum travel (MAX), or outside them. The invention has the advantage that, despite the possible occurrence of large unexpected or fault-induced changes in values in the actual angular positions detected, the direction of rotation of the shaft of the angular position detector can always be correctly determined in all cases. |
