A method of coating an optical cable/wire or light-wave conductor with powder in a tubular chamber is disclosed. By sucking off air at outlet 11 as the cable moves through the chamber, an underpressure is created sucking in powder 5. At the same time, the underpressure also creates an air current which flows along the cable causing powder to be deposited along and around its length. Alternatively, the flow of air may be in the opposite direction to the movement of the cable through the chamber. In both cases, the thickness of the coating layer is controlled by regulating devices and the powder may be electrically charged to enhance coating. The air inlet can take the form of an annular nozzle arranged around the cable.
