Process for prodn. of coated paper for printing comprises coating a paper substrate with a surface layer of a coating compsn. comprising a water-soluble starch or starch deriv. as binder and a colour pigment; drying the coated paper surface; applying steam in an amt. of 0.5-4.0 g/m<2> to the dry coated paper surface to redistribute the water soluble binder in the coating layer; opt. drying the coated paper; and finishing the coated paper using a calender.
