Novel steroids prepn. Compds. of gen. formula (1) (where R1 is H or 1-2C alkyl) are prepd. by (a) subjecting compd. of partial formula (II) (where R2 is 1-4C alkyl) in acid medium to hydrolysis with rearrangement or (b) rearranging compd. of partial formula (III). or (c) oxidising the corresp. 17 beta - (1-hydroxyethyl) compd. or (d) oxidising in acid medium either of compds (IV) or (V). Compds. are useful as medicaments.
