The diesel engine (1) has a fuel pump (41)which is driven via a control belt (17) and a number of engine auxiliaries, e.g an alternator (42) and compressor (43), driven via separate drive belts (18,77) coupled to the engine drive shaft. The fuel pump is positioned along the side of the engine so that it partially overlaps the cylinder head, with at least 2 of the auxiliaries placed one above the other beneath it. Pref. the fuel pump is supported from the engine by holder secured in part to the cylinder head and in part to the engine block. The engine can be positioned transversely within the engine compartment.
