A bearing configuration for a roller (1) of a rolling mill comprises inner rings (6a, 6b) secured to the roll neck (2) and a bearing housing (11) which is located in a chock in the roll stand frame. The roll neck (2) and bearing housing (11) are designed to accept oil-film bearings (8) or roller bearings (7) as alternatives in the same chock. The rings (6a, 6b) act either as an inner race for rollers (9) or as an inner slide ring for a bearing bush (10). An axial thrust bearing (4) may be included.
