This washer for contaminated soil, can also clean plant components through which fluids flow. Its wash vessel (1) has perpendicular side walls (7) ad an edge for eluate flow. In a new design, the perforated, one-piece metal base has upwardly facing, equally distributed tapering nozzles, for wash water and agitating gas, e.g. air; with openings for wash water withdrawal. Beneath, and connected to the wash vessel, is a drain vessel (14) to which lines and valves control the supply of fluids and air, which will pass through the nozzles, and into the wash vessel. Also claimed are: (a) a method of washing in the tank described, using wash-water and organic solvent having one or more benzene rings with hydrocarbon side chains, each containing three or more carbon atoms; (b) a method of washing plant equipment.
