A plate heat exchanger suitable for differing flow volumes of two fluids consists of a plurality of heat exchanger plates 2-8 stacked one on top of the other, which have a surrounding rim 2'-8' projecting out from the planes of the plates. The respective successive heat exchanger plates 2-8 are tightly sealed around their edges so as to form flow passageways 20-25 between the plates for two heat exchange media. These flow passageways are connected by means of recesses 16, 17 in the heat exchanger plates 2-8 with at least one additional flow passageway so that a first heat exchange medium can flow through a first group of parallel channels and a second heat exchange medium through another group. The recesses 16, 46 for the first heat exchange medium have flow passages of substantially greater cross-section than the recesses 17, 47 for the second heat exchange medium.
