The appts. includes a cooler (3) arranged in the beam path between the light source and the optical conductor (1). The cooler at least surrounds the input section of the optical conductor (1). The device includes a circulation pump which moves the coolant along the input section of the optical conductor (1). The coolant is preferably a fluid. The optical conductor is preferably a multiple fibre optical conductor whose individual fibres (14) are arranged behind the input surface. the individual fibres are closely packed together but spaced apart to also allow the coolant to flow perpendicular to the conductor axis. The input section of the multifibre conductor (1) may be arranged in a cooler recirculation tube (4) which closely surrounds the end of the conductor. The cooler may have two concentric fluid inlet or outlet pillars for connection to the recirculation tube (4).
