Disclosed is a process for producing composite materials containing at least one shrinkage-matched ceramic material. The process is characterised by the fact that the starting material for the ceramic material(s) whose shrinkage characteristics during sintering are to be matched to the other component(s) is such that the ceramic-forming component consists essentially of the following: (a) at least one ceramic powder (i) whose particles are up to 500 nm in size; (b) at least one ceramic powder (i) as defined under (a) mixed with at least one powder (ii) of at least one sinter-inhibiting substance whose particle size is equal to or smaller than that of the powder (i); or (c) at least one ceramic powder (i) as defined under (a) mixed with at least one ceramic powder (iii) whose particle size is greater than that of the powder (i) and up to 500 mu m.
