The illumination intensity of a fluorescent lamp (24) which has cathodes (36) and an ionizable medium separating the cathodes is controlled during each half-cycle (44-46, 46-48) of applied AC current by creating and applying between the cathodes an ignition voltage pulse (134) of a magnitude greater than a characteristic operating voltage (40) of the ionizable medium, and thereafter extinguishing the lamp during that same half-cycle by reducing the voltage between the cathodes to a value less than the operating voltage at a point (52, 62, 54, 64) prior to a zero crossing (46, 48) of the applied AC current half-cycle. |
