Knowledge structures are represented with the aid of graphical objects on the basis of a model of the defective machine. Each allowed graphical object is composed of elementary objects which express units from a domain forming the basis for the diagnostic system. Each allowed graphical object in this case corresponds to a syntactically correct knowledge structure of this domain. It can be built up out of multiple-use modules and, as a result, generally has a graph-like hierarchical structure. From the graphical objects or from the knowledge graphically represented in this manner, an executable knowledge base is generated. The system allows experts to input expert knowledge graphically interactively even without the assistance of a knowledge engineer, and to generate a knowledge-based diagnostic system which can be used for diagnosing defects in technical systems.
