The procedure for separating harmful substances and recovering valuable materials, from coal carbonisation effluent, includes a) freeing ammonia from waste water arising during coal conversion and raw gas cleaning, pref. following ammonia stripping, by the addition of waste alkali, pref. from oxidative gas cleaning, b) sending to a fractionating reverse osmosis (FRO) system where it is separated into various aqueous fractions , c) concentrating the residue from the first stage of FRO in a one- or multistage evaporation system (EDS), d) dissolving the salt rich concentrate arising from EDS into an essentially pure salt fraction and a fluid fraction laden with impurities (CSB), and e) using the permeate from the FRO first stage, after liberation of CSB components, as clean water in the system and/or for the re-dissolving of the low-CSB salt fraction.
