PURPOSE: To obtain a projection type liquid crystal display device in which the white balance and the conformity of chromacity and luminance of a projected screen are satisfactory. CONSTITUTION: In a color synthesis optical system synthesizing color lights transmitting through liquid crystal display elements 8 to 10, optical length adjusting means consisting of polarizing beam splitters 11, 12, phase difference plates 17, 19 and luminous flux reflecting elements 18, 20 are provided in optical paths from a light source 1 to three sheets of liquid crystal display elements 8 to 10. The numbers of reflections in respective optical paths of three color lights going from the light source 1 to a projection lens 7 are unified to odd numbered times or even numbered times. Moreover, optical path adjusting means arc arranged and constituted so that respective optical path lengths become almost the same. By such a constitution, since relative illuminance distributions of luminous flux illuminating respective liquid crystal display elements 8 to 10 become almost equal, the white balance and the uniformity of chromacity and luminance of the projected screen obtained by synthesizing them become satisfactory. |
