Prepn. of 3-aminomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexylamine (isophorone diamine; IPDA) from 3-cyano-3,5,5-trimethyl-cyclohexanone (isophorone nitrile; IPN) is carried out in three separate reaction zones by: (a) reacting IPN with excess liquid NH3 at 20-150 deg.C and 50-300 bar; (b) hydrogenating the reaction prod. with H2 in the presence of excess NH3 at 50-100 deg.C and 50-300 bar; and (c) hydrogenating the reaction prod. with N2 at 110-160 deg.C and 150-300 bar. Acidic metal oxide catalyst is used in stage (a); and hydrogenation catalyst, opt. with basic components or on neutral or basic supports, in stages (b) and (c). |
