In known stop valves, damage to or a defect in a spring (21) cannot always be seen, and this is a considerable disadvantage from the point of view of operating safety. The tension or compression spring (23) that is used in the new stop valve is arranged outside the valve housing (1), where a pivot arm (18) is arranged transversely to the actuating shaft (11); a spring (23) is attached to the end of this pivot arm that is remote from the shaft. The other end of the spring (23) is held on a support (20) that is provided on the outside of the valve housing. The pin (22) and the support (20) are so arranged that, in the closed position, an intended line of connection (24) between the support (20) and the pin (22) extends with a lateral offset in the direction of the closing movement, transversely to the longitudinal axis (17) of the shaft. The status and condition of the spring are always visible. In addition, it is possible to arrive at a lightly constructed valve housing (1), and there is no need for a locking mechanism to hold the closing element (9) in the open or the closed position.
