PURPOSE: To provide a new bicyclic heterocyclic compound producible by reacting an (R)-4-hydroxy-2-pyrrolidone derivative with an aminoacetaldehyde dialkyl acetal and useful as a production intermediate for a carbapenem-type antibacterial agent. CONSTITUTION: This new bicyclic heterocyclic compound is a (6S)-6- substituted-6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrrolo[1,2-alimidazole derivative expressed by formula I (R<8> is H, benzyl, an alkylbenzyl or an alkoxybenzyl; R<3> is H or an alkyl). The compound is useful e.g. as a production intermediate for a 1-β- methylcarbapenem derivative having broad antibacterial spectrum, high antibacterial activity and excellent safety. The compound can be produced by converting (R)-4-hydroxy-2-pyrrolidone of formula II into (S)-4-mercapto compound of formula III, treating the product successively with a benzyl halide and phosphorus pentasulfide, reacting the obtained thiopyrrolidone compound of formula IV with an aminoacetaldehyde dialkyl acetal to effect the cyclization reaction and hydrolyzing the cyclized product. |
