PURPOSE: To obtain a water-absorbing resin which is excellent in stability since it has a very low water-sol. content through its water-absorbing capacity is high by subjecting a water-sol. monomer to free-radical polymn. in the presence of water, a cross-linker, and a specific compd. CONSTITUTION: A water-sol. monomer (e.g. acrylic acid), if necessary together with a polysaccharide (e.g. starch), is subjected to free-radical polymn. in the presence of water, a cross-linker (e.g. methylenebisacrylamide, and a thiol compd. selected from among the compds. represented by the formulas HS-(CH2 CH2 X<1> )n -(CH2 CH2 X<2> )m -H (wherein X<1> is X<2> are each O or S; (n) is a positive number; and (m) is 0 or a positive number), [HS-(CH2 )PCOO]q -R (wherein (p) and (q) are each (n); and R is an aliph. mono- or polyol residue), and HS-(CHX<3> )r -(CHX<4> )s COOH (wherein X<3> is H or COOH; X<4> is H or SH; (r) is (m); and (s) is (n)), thus giving a water-absorbing resin.
