Method of treating contaminated soil

A method is described of treating material contaminated with heavy metals, for example contaminated soil, dredgings and residues from the cleaning of soil and dredgings, which method involves the following successive steps: a) the contaminated material is made to contain such an amount of clay minerals and organic substances that the lutum content is at least 10% (m/m) and the content of organic substances is at least 2.5% (m/m); b) the material is incinerated at a temperature of between 500 degree C and 1100 degree C under such conditions that the clay minerals are vitrified at least in part but are not sintered to any significant extent; and c) the heated material is cooled and is conditioned for from 1 to 8 weeks at a moisture content of between 5 and 25% (m/m) at ambient temperature.
