PURPOSE: To obtain a rotary head type recording/reproducing device for coping with a plurality of data rates where the number of channels of a recording/ reproducing amplifier is reduced, a high data rate is secured, and the change in a track width is suppressed, thus corresponding to plural data rates. CONSTITUTION: When performing recording/reproducing in×N long-time mode, a head 2a and a head 2c which oppose each other by 180 deg. are used if N is odd and proximity heads 2a and 2c are used if N is even for recording and reproducing every N/2 turn. Only one head is used simultaneously, continuous recording is achieved in a standard mode, and a recording/reproducing amplifier required simultaneously is only for one channel, thus also achieving a high data rate. Depending on the setting of the height of the heads 2c and 2a, the change in track width can be suppressed.
