LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT

PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display element with which intermediate contrast display is made possible by decreasing the hysteresis voltage width in the V-T characteristics of dispersible liquid crystals. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal display element includes a light controllable layer consisting of pair of oppositely arranged substrates 1a, 1b which have electrodes on opposite surface and at least one of which are transparent and dispersion type liquid crystals 4 which are held between a pair of these substrates and include a high-polymer matrix and liquid crystal drops dispersed in this high-polymer matrix. The element described above is so formed that the orientation state of the liquid crystal molecules near the boundary with the high-polymer matrix existing on the one electrode side in the liquid crystal drops within the dispersion type liquid crystals and the orientation state of the liquid crystal molecules near the boundary with the high-polymer matrix existing on the other electrode side vary.
