PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic disk device provided with a head positioning means considering a shape of a reproducing sensitivity distribution of an MR head and generating a position signal. CONSTITUTION: The MR head 12 reads burst information of four series, and differential amplifiers 26, 27 generate N signal and Q signal of two-phase. The shape of the reproducing sensitivity distribution of the MR head 12 is made a triangle, and when ratios of the left side and the right side of the triangle for the base are defined r1 , r2 respectively, the new position signal is operated by the relation: V signal = r1×N signal +2×Q signal U signal = r2×N signal-r1×Q signal. The MR head 12 is positioned, basing on the two-phase position signals. Thus, the head 12 is positioned at high speed and high precision based on the linear and correct position signal.
