<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ATM exchange which has a physically realizable one terabit speed or faster based upon generalized growable packet exchange architecture. SOLUTION: This invented ATM packet exchange 10A has many input interfaces connected to a single-stage switching means 14A, and they are connected to output modules 16o to 16m . The ATM packet exchange 10A has a single-stage exchange means (14A or 14B) which is controlled an out-band controller 20 differently from other growable packet exchanges. This ATM packet exchange 10, however, is greatly reduced in complexity as compared with electronic crossbar exchanges of similar size or their mapping bodies (isomorphs) of the same type. This ATM packet exchange 10 is very flexible, so the same exchange means and out-band controller architecture are used to expand the exchange so that variable length packets, circuit exchange connectivity, and a fault tolerant redundant circuit are actualized.</p> |
