PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a highly reliable moving unit having no mechanical part by composing a control rod, at least partially, of a good electric conductor and arranging a cladding to receive an electromagnetic winding being fed from a polyphase unit thereby inducing an axial force on the control rod through asynchronous magnetic coupling. SOLUTION: A control rod A comprises a jacket 28 of electric machine made of a good electric conductor having length equal to the sum of the stroke of a cluster of absorption rods 5 and the height of a stator B, and a coaxial magnetic core 29 both of which serve as a rotor. The stator B disposed around a tubular cladding 9 has a magnetic circuit formed of a pectinate member 13 and a circular coil 14. When AC three-phase power is fed to the coil 14, a flux traversing a partial air gap defined by the thickness of the cladding 9 induces a circular current in the jacket 28. Consequently, a linear thrust is developed in the axial direction according to the principle of asynchronous magnetic coupling. With such arrangement, the cluster can be moved without requiring any mechanical part.
