DEVICE FOR DETECTING LOOKING ASIDE OF DRIVER

PURPOSE: To accurately catch a looking aside of driver regardless of the light environment in a car. CONSTITUTION: The input picture from a TV camera 11 which picks up the image of a driver is converted by an AD converter 12, then it is inputted to a picture memory 13. A face width detecting circuit 14 binarizes the picture and eliminates noise. The decrease of white picture elements is checked in both directions of right and left from the center in the X-axis coordinate direction and the X-axis coordinate in which the decrease of the white pixel is stopped after the rapid decreasing, is taken as the face width. A standard position learning circuit 15 sets the standard position of the face by learning the face width which is detected several times before and a face direction detecting circuit 16 detects the direction of the face based on the deviation amount from the standard position of the face in the face width coordinates. A looking aside judging circuit 17 judges looking aside of a driver when the looking direction of a driver toward one direction is continued for a prescribed time and a reporting device 18 is operated. As the face width of the driver affected less by light environment change is detected and the face direction is accurately captured regardless of the light environment.
