The invention refers to a method of winning coal, particularly from thick coal-seams. The substance of the method according to the invention lies in that roof coal is under control caved onto the armoured face conveyor over canopies of the supports in the front part of the face. Said controlled caving of the roof coal is maintained by raising and lowering the canopies of the hydraulic roof supports known per se. The size of the coal-loading opening formed by the wall of the front coal and the edge of the canopy of the hydraulic roof support is adjustable by means of the number of canopies and the inclination thereof.
