The method involves delivery of items (1) for sorting to a station where e.g. a bar code reader (3) identifies each item and supplies data to a stored-program controller (4) before the item proceeds on to a series of trap-doors (5) operated by individual control units (7). The appropriate trap-door is opened allowing the item to fall into a selected container (6) addressed by a control unit (8). The flaps (5',5'') are opened to different angles (alpha, beta) affording more time for the forward flap (5') to move.
