A vehicle with a hard top has a roof section (3) and a pivoting rear screen section (4) which connects to the roof. A tensioning cable forms part of the restraining system controlling the relative movement of the roof and rear screen sections, and the cable (10) comprises a load carrying cable (13) carrying the gravity force of the roof construction (2) at least upon its opening and closing movement, and also a security cable (14), which runs parallel to the load bearing cable. The two cables are connected on one side at the rear end of the roof via an upper linkage (15) which is fixed to the roof, and on the other side via a lower linkage (16) fixed to the vehicle bodywork. They are connected such that under the influence of an opposing force greater than that in the load bearing cable, the security cable becomes tensioned via the linkages.
