High speed monitor for inspecting rail profile of railway track

The monitor has at least one light source (6) emitting a narrow beam (11) to illuminate the contours of the rails (4,5) to be inspected and at least one camera (7) continuously recording and storing image data from the light beam reflected from the rail. The beam lies in a plane at a defined angle to the vertical plane of the rail but the light source is displaced or located sideways and upwards relative to the horizontal contact plane at top of rail surface over an area (27). The light source and the camera are mounted on a measurement head (1) and the camera is located at a defined angle relative to the vertical plane of the rail and the horizontal contact plane.
