The tool (10) has an operating spindle (22) which carries a tool (44) esp. a cutting disk. The spindle (22) is driven by a motor via movement transmission parts (16,18,30). The latter are arranged in a gear housing (14). The movement transmission parts (16,18,30) are arranged with a predetermined rotary play relative to each other. When the motor is switched off, rotary force from the kinetic energy of the tool (44) between the movement transmission parts (16,18,30) serves to actuate a braking mechanism (34,36). The braking mechanism (34,36) is preferably arranged inside the gear housing (14). Two of the movement transmission parts may be interengaging bevel wheels (16,18) forming an angle drive. Of these the larger bevel wheel is a plate wheel (18). At least one of the movement transmission parts preferably acts as an actuator to release and/or free the brakes.
