Process for purification of process effluent water contg. phenolic contaminants comprises: (A) adjusting the pH of the waste water to 0-5, esp. with an inorganic acid; (B) subjecting the acid waste water to a single- or multistage reacting extraction with an amine as extraction agent dissolved in a pref. 4-20C hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon mixt. solvent, opt. in combination with a dissolving assistant; (C) re-extracting the organic phase from (B), consisting essentially of amine, phenolic impurities and hydrocarbon, with aq. alkali hydroxide soln. to transfer the impurities into the aq. phase; (D) passing the aq. phase contg. the impurities directly to a re-utilisation step or concentrating and neutralising it prior to incineration or re-utilisation; (E) recycling the organic phase from the re-extraction (C) to the extraction (B); and (F) after testing the compsn. of the purified water from the extraction (B), using it as fresh water, concentrating it and using it in electrolysis, or releasing it into the environment.
