Shaft seal in which the sealing ring (1) lies on the ring edges (22,32) of the rotating and static bodies (21,31). The tangent (13) running from the ring edge (22) forms the angle ( alpha ) and the tangent (14) running from the ring edge (32) forms the angle ( beta ). The relationship alpha /- beta is such that the pressing action curve in the sealing zone has a steeper gradient towards the fluid chamber than towards the outer chamber. The chamfers of the ring edges are concave or convex in the circumferential direction.
