Enriching combustion air with oxygen when refuse is burned is a known procedure. Even low-level enrichment causes a considerable rise in temperature in the combustion chamber. In order to limit that rise in temperature, it has been the practice to spray wet sludge into the combustion chamber as an extinguishing agent. This makes it possible to enrich the air to any desired degree, but requires a very large quantity of oxygen, thus considerably increasing operating costs. According to the present invention, the additional oxygen-enriched air is blown from air boxes (7) into the refuse layer, independently of the primary air, only within narrow zones extending transversely, in a roller grill hearth (1) within the confines of the roller gussets between any two adjacent rollers (5). In this way, an intense fire is fanned and ignites the overlying refuse (8). The combustion efficiency is hereby considerably improved at little cost and without any unwanted rise in temperature. |
