An apparatus (200) for simultaneously cutting and notching a pipe includes an upper knife assembly (35) having a pipe cutting knife (356) and notch cutting knives (352,360) with cutting edges adjacent a surface of the pipe and a lower knife assembly (300) having a pipe cutting knife (306) and notch cutting knives (302,304) with cutting edges adjacent an opposite surface of the pipe. A method for cutting and notching a pipe includes stopping the axial and rotational movement of a pipe and moving the lower knife (300) assembly into an overlapping relation with the upper knife assembly (350). The notch cutting knives are also moved into a cutting position and the axial and rotational pipe movement is resumed. <IMAGE>
