The container, esp for a drink, consists of a base (1), and a side wall (2) made from a succession of zones (2A, 2C, 2G, 2I, 2K) of different diameters, and a lid. The container is made from a metal blank, e.g. of steel, aluminium or aluminium alloy, shaped to form the base and a side wall having a continuous diameter (D), and then forming the side wall into a series of zones of different diameters in a succession of expansion and retraction operations.
