PURPOSE: To produce p-xylene in high recovery at a low cost in an easily separable state by contacting an 8C aromatic hydrocarbon raw material with a hydrogenative dealkylation catalyst and separating the isomers to remarkably decrease the ethylbenzene concentration in a liquid to be supplied to an isomer decomposition step. CONSTITUTION: p-Xylene is produced from an 8C aromatic hydrocarbon mixture containing ethylbenzene by supplying the 8C aromatic hydrocarbon mixture to a xylene-isomerization process containing a hydrogenative dealkylation catalyst [e.g. a catalyst containing a metal having an olefin-hydrogenation activity (group IB metal, group VIB metal, group VIIB metal, group VIII metal, etc.) and an acid-type zeolite], contacting the hydrocarbon mixture with the catalyst A and separating the isomers. The catalyst A preferably contains 0.01-1.0wt.% of rhenium based on the acid-type zeolite. |
