PURPOSE: To obtain methanol under mild conditions with low byproduct levels and in high selectivity in an industrially advantageous way by reaction between methane and oxygen in the presence of a lanthanoid compound, reducing agent and protonic acid. CONSTITUTION: The objective methanol is obtained by reaction, in the presence of (A) a lanthanoid compound such as europium chloride, europium nitrate or europium carbonate, (B) a reducing agent such as zinc (amalgam) and (C) a protonic acid such as trifluoroacetic acid or perfluoropropionic acid, between (D) methane and (E) oxygen. The reaction is pref. conducted at 20-60 deg.C under the partial pressure of the component E of 0.1-5atm and the total pressure of 1-50atm. |
