PURPOSE: To produce activated carbon having a metal oxide deposited practically only in the interior and useful as an adsorbent, a catalyst carrier, various functional materials or starting material for such materials by a simple process. CONSTITUTION: Activated carbon and a metal alkoxide are separately disposed in a hermetically sealed vessel or in a flow of dry gas and vapor of the metal alkoxide is generated, adsorbed on the activated carbon and hydrolyzed by contact with steam. The metal alkoxide is preferably tetraethoxysilane, aluminum isopropoxide, titanium isopropoxide or triethoxyborane. The activated carbon is preferably fibrous activated carbon having 300-2,000m<2> /g specific surface area, a sheet made of the fibrous activated carbon or a three- dimensional structure made of activated carbon. |
