PURPOSE: To obtain in high selectivity under mild conditions using an inexpensive aqueous formaldehyde solution, an unsaturated alcohol useful as an intermediate for medicines, perfumes etc., by reaction of an olefin with an aqueous formaldehyde solution in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION: In the presence of (A) a catalyst, a halide of metal, i.e., tin, gallium, indium or scandium, (B) a compound of formula I [R<1> , R<2> and R<3> are each H, a (OH-substituted) 1-10C alkyl, alkenyl or aryl] is reacted with (C) an aqueous formaldehyde solution in (D) a solvent homogeneously soluble for the components B and C (e.g. acetonitrile, isopropyl alcohol, THF) to obtain the objective compound of formula II. |
