The annular earth electrode is in the form of the conventional earthing electrode but with the outer end in the form of a ring with a hollow centre. The hollow centre is placed immediately above the centre electrode of the spark plug. The spark spreads sideways as in a conventional spark plug, but also spreads into the hollow centre of the earth electrode, increasing the area of the spark in contact with the air/fuel mixture.
