The wrapper consists of a flexible plastic panel (1) which covers the main cylindrical portion of the reel (7), having a width which is similar to that of the reel, and strips of plastic film (3) which are attached to the edges of the panel and which folds over the ends of the reel and tuck into a central hole (8). The panel and/or the strips are made from a polyolefin material, pref. polypropylene, with the panel made in the form of a cellular extrusion having a weight of 250-200 g/m<2> for a thickness of 1.5 to 10 mm. The film strips are joined to the edges of the panel by welding.
