Prepn. of compressed washing and cleaning agents with high powder density comprises forming and compressing a premix of solid and liq. washing agent components in which the solid components comprise anionic surfactant, builders and alkalising agents, and the liq. component comprises nonionic surfactants of which more than 50% are fatty acid alkyl ester alkoxylates of formula R<1>-CO2-(AO)m-R<2> (I) or (II), where R<1> = 5-21C opt. branched, opt. satd. alkyl gp.; R<2> = H or 1-6C opt. branched, opt. satd. alkyl gp.; R<3>-R<5> = H or -CO-R<6> with the proviso that R<3>-R<5> may not all be H simultaneously; R<6> = 5-21C opt. branched, opt. satd. alkyl gp.; AO = a 2-4C alkylene oxide unit; and m, n, o and p = 1-60, pref. 1-30 and partic. 3-12. Pref. the non-ionic surfactant component may be a mixt. of fatty acid alkyl ester alkoxylates of formula (I) alkylpolyglycosides (III) and/or polyhydroxy fatty acid amides (IV) in a ratio (I):(III)+(IV) of 1:1 to 9:1. The anionic surfactant may be in liq., pasty or solid form. Bleaching agents such as perborate monohydrate or Na percarbonate may be added as a solid component in amts. of 5-25 wt.% w.r.t. total compsn.. Bleach activators, enzymes, perfumes and colourants may be added subsequently to the extruded compsn., esp. where the enzyme and bleach activator are added as a separately compacted mixt. produced by extrusion or pelleting.
