A building, packing or filling material, pref. for use in underground mining, is claimed (I), contg. a plastic component consisting of plastic residues or waste plastic (II). Also claimed are processes for the prodn. of (I), the disposal of carbon-rich slag from incinerators, the prepn. of (II) for transport, the prodn. and pretreatment of (II), and the prepn. and purification of components of (I). Also claimed is a binder for a pref. form of (I), contg. MgO and the MgCl2-contg. spent liq. from a potash and salt mine. (I) is produced by shredding the waste plastic (II) until it is able to absorb the spent liq. (III) from a potash or salt mine, then mixing it with (III) and the binder (IV) from a flue gas purificn. plant. Carbon-rich slag from incinerators is disposed of by combining with chloride-rich residues from the mine. The partly impure plastic (II) is milled and treated with chemicals, esp. lime with a low surface moisture content, until no more gas is evolved and the static charge is eliminated. A process for the treatment of (II) comprises washing with a liq. with pH greater than 12. A magnesia binder for (I) is prepd. by mixing the MgCl2-contg. spent liq. from a potash and salt mine with MgO. (II) is produced from waste plastic by heating to make it inert and convert it into a foam. A process for the disposal of (II) comprises making it inert, pelletising or granulating it and using it to fill water-bearing cavities. A process for the prepn. and purification of (II) comprises addn. of an alkaline component (IV) before and/or during the prepn. and granulation process, which combines with added moisture to dissolve amphoteric metallic impurities.
