<p>Disclosed are morphine-3-esters of formula (I), the enzymatic hydrolysis of which has a half-life of from 0.5 to 12 hours under physiologic conditions and the non-enzymatic hydrolysis of which has a half-life in excess of 24 hours in an aqueous medium at pH values of 6-8, especially at pH 7, except for 3-pivaloyl morphine.
